We recently completed an efficient, non-hydrostatic version of ROMS. It
is currently in a beta testing phase but will be publicly available this
fall.
In celebration of this fact we are organizing a workshop on the topic of
small scale, non-hydrostatic ocean modeling in Brest, France, October
15-17, 2018.
This workshop aims to advance our collective understanding of oceanic
processes at scales of O(10m-1 km), their mechanistic functioning, and
relevance for larger scales and the budget of the climate system. These
scales span the range between submesoscale dynamics and isotropic
boundary layer turbulence. The focus of the workshop is on numerical
modeling of these scales, both in the surface layer as well as the
bottom boundary layer.
Despite many recent advances, a gap still exists between the
capabilities to model realistic ocean flow on the one hand, and LES of
the turbulent boundary layer on the other hand. We invite participants
and contributions to novel numerical approaches to bridge this gap in
numerical modeling as well as applied studies that target ocean dynamics
and its implications..
We trust that it will be an exciting event and hope to see many people
attend. The workshop will be followed by a two days masterclass, aimed
at graduate students and postdocs. The website is now open to abstract
submission and registration. The deadline for abstracts is September 2,
2018.
