Hi Marco

Taking curl of the momentum equation is the proper method. Due to discretization the vorticity budget may not close to numerical precision, but being sure you have closed the momentum budget first will give you confidence you are doing things correctly. 

And note that if you are using spherical coordinates the discretization will cause the pressure term to not vanish, so you need to account for that
