[MITgcm-support] THSIce noisy/unphysical output

Hi,

I'm afraid the extra inputs for CheapAML didn't seem to change much in the results.

Following on from successfully running the setup you suggested, Jean-Michel (MITgcm_contrib/verification_other/offline_cheapaml/input.dyn/), I tried the same setup but with much higher resolution. The results showed noise in the ice.

Naturally I tried my setup at low resolution and this didn't show any noise in the ice. However, I then did runs with a range of resolutions and none of them showed any noise, including one with the original resolution.

The only possible difference in setup seems to be the viscosity and diffusion, which were changed when testing resolution. Do you think they could be responsible for the noise? I have submitted a run that should test this.

The alternative is that recent changes to the machine I run on have made a difference somehow.

Hi Patrick,

The defaults in pkg/cheapaml fit a basin-scale / global-scale domain
using Lat-Lon grid.

I would recommand to try to specify  all the cheapaml input files
(so that you don't rely on any default)
like in this examples:
 MITgcm_contrib/verification_other/offline_cheapaml/input/data.cheapaml
Note that you probably want to set (like in the example above):
 useDLongWave=.TRUE.,
otherwise the long-wave is not right for a cartesian grid.
And I am not sure if, for seaice forcing, you can run without:
 useFreshWaterFlux=.TRUE.,

There is also a setup using seaice dynamics:
 MITgcm_contrib/verification_other/offline_cheapaml/input.dyn/
