Peter Jan, to add to Patrick's and Martin's replies, pkg/seaice does have some 
rudimentary "multiple layer" capability.  That is, open ocean, multi-category 
ice, and snow.  It is turned on with "#define SEAICE_MULTICATEGORY" in 
SEAICE_OPTIONS.h
