I'm sorry, but I'm not sure what you are saying here.  Are you saying  
the diagnostic that Lee was plotting was the gradient of the density  
anomaly \rho'?

\rho' = \rho-\rho0-rho_ref(z)?

i.e. d\rho/dz -d\rho_ref/dz?

That would jibe with your equation above.  Otherwise, I'm a little  
confused.
