Hi Don,

Welcome to the MITgcm-support list.

In regards to the optfile, you probably want to use something similar to
these two files:

  MITgcm/tools/build_options/irix64_ip27_f77
  MITgcm/tools/build_options/irix64_ip35_f77

Could you please try each of them using the syntax:

  cd MITgcm/verification/exp2/build
  ../../../tools/genmake2 -mods=../code \
      -of=../../../tools/build_options/irix64_ip35_f7

and then please send (cut-and-paste into the email) any errors that you
get.

Unfortunately, we don't currently own any Irix machines matching your
description.  So its likely that we'll have to work a little to create a
custom optfile for your machine.  Hopefully, it won't take too long!

Compiling latest MITgcm

I'm told that I need an irix64_ip30_f77 optfile. I'm running on an 
older SGI octane with an OS no more than a year old. Suggestions?
