[MITgcm-support] Curvilinear grid

The other parts of the code associated with the cubed grid are controlled by
the parameter useCubedSphereExchange in eedata and should all be controlled
correctly. If this is absent from the file eedata then the only part you
need be careful of is in ini_curvilinear_grid.F where there are some cube
specific operations. As you saw in the previous email, I will seperate this
out one day.

Subject: [MITgcm-support] Curvilinear grid

Dr Adcroft,

I was reading your answer to Patrick Heimbach, and I hope you can give me
some advise. I am using the model with a cylindrical grid that I generated
based on what is said in GRID.h and in the documentation. I realized that
the model assumed I was on a cube grid for example when is making the
coriolis parameter to vary in the domain. I changed this so my coriolis was
constant in the domain (in ini_params.F), and turned off the metric terms. I
also use the invariant form of the momentum equations. However my runs using
this are not completely satisfactory. And I was wondering where else does
the model assume that I am on a cube grid?

Thanks,

Yes it is quite possible. The only thing the model does wrong is that

it assumes we're on a cube grid when reading the curvilinear grid data

- I have fixed this in my own version but need to check/rectify it

with the latest cube stuff.

The grid generation needs to give point-to-point distances and surface

areas for the four grids of model variables (T,U,V,Zeta) as defined in

GRID.h .

Subject: [MITgcm-support] stretched grid

Hi Alistair,

is it possible to run the model on a stretched

orthogonal grid?

I reckon, it should be (fairly easy) as long as it

is orthogonal, right?

All that needs to be done should be to generate

correct face cells that are then read by the model.

Is there any documentation of what input the model needs

(and which secret flags need to be set)?

Thanks

-Patrick
