Martin, do your spikes occur during the first time step?  Are they caused by 
adjustment of sea ice to initial water temperature or is it something else?

Which specific unfortunate parameterization are you referring to?  There are 
many ;-)

Also out of curiosity what is your domain's horizontal dimensions and grid spacing?
