Jean-Michel, shortwave is treated in a special way by KPP.  Look for Qsw in
kpp_calc.F and kpp_transport_t.F.  Essentially KPP needs to know how much heat
is injected within the boundary layer and how much below the boundary layer.

Having said this, if your model surface level is deep, say 50 m, then you can
just set Qsw to zero and include everything in Qnet and it's not going to make
very much difference in the solution.

So the answer is that shortwave is not absolutely necessary for KPP.  We can
get rid of the kpp_check requirement if you like.
