JMC, I agree that it may be a bit early to include mnc by default.

This should not be necessary.  The CPP #ifdef-s should correctly exclude
things within this file if mnc is turned off.

Also, JMC, have you installed netcdf on your laptop yet?  You can get
the latest RPMs at:

  http://mitgcm.org/eh3/netCDF/

and I'll be happy to walk you through the install over the phone.  My
number is 339-927-6897 and I'll be available all weekend.
