[MITgcm-support] PsiVEL zero in ice shelf cavities

Just in case anyone else has this problem, I figured it out: PsiVEL is a 3D variable, not a barotropic 2D variable. So you have to put it in a diagnostic stream with other 3D variables. If you put it in a stream with 2D variables, only the surface layer will be written, and hence the cavities masked.

Subject: [MITgcm-support] PsiVEL zero in ice shelf cavities
Hello,
I am running with ice shelf cavities and the horizontal velocity streamfunction (PsiVEL diagnostic) is zero in the cavities (even though velocity is nonzero). I wonder if somewhere the code is masking with hFac at k=1 instead of the real land mask. But, I've been digging through the code for a while now and can't figure out if/where this is happening. Does anybody know?
Many thanks,
Kaitlin
