Zhaomin, the initial conditions and the forcing for cube78 were adjusted using a Green's function approach:
http://ecco2.org/manuscripts/2005/green.pdf

The initial conditions are a blend of the Polar Hydrographic Climatology (PHC):
http://psc.apl.washington.edu/Climatology.html

of the WOCE Global Hydrographic Climatology (WGHC):
http://odv.awi.de/en/data/ocean/woce_global_hydrographic_climatology/

and of model spin-up.

To a good approximation the initial conditions are:

1.67 * (PHC + 13-yr spin-up) - 0.37 * PHC - 0.13 * (PHC + 3-yr spin-up) - 0.17 * (WGHC + 3-yr spin-up)

To a good approximation, cube78 forcing is ERA40:
http://www.ecmwf.int/products/data/archive/descriptions/e4/

but with rain adjusted based on GPCP pentad analysis:
http://precip.gsfc.nasa.gov/

and so as to avoid volume (salinity or SSH) drift in the model.

Let me know if you need more details on any of the above.
