[MITgcm-support] heuristics for sponge boundary parameters?

i am soliciting remarks on heuristics for choosing the parameters in the sponge boundary configuration.

for example, how wide 'should' the sponge boundary zone be for a domain NNX x NNY ?

what should the ratio of [UV]relaxobcsinner to [UV]relaxobcsbound be?

i/ve tried some experiments and so far the results are not useful.

is there an 'optimal' set of these parameters?
