Hi David, I am copying your e-mail to MITgcm support. I suspect (but have not
checked) that the diagnostic you are referring to
8 |RI | 15 |SM LL |non-dimensional |Richardson Number (non-dimensional)
is probably only available for the atmosphere and for atmospheric package. Two
types of Richardson numbers, surface-bulk and gradient-shear, are computed by
pkg/kpp, but as far as I am aware and last I checked, they had not yet been
included in diagnostics output. One option for you, if you are satisfied with
the KPP computation of Ri, would be to add these to available diagnostics list.
See pkg/kpp/kpp_diagnostics_init.F, pkg/kpp/kpp_do_diags.F, and kpp_routines
for examples on how to do this.
Dimitris

Hello Dr. Menemenlis,
I am working with Galen McKinley at the University of Wisconsin on a
North Atlantic setup for the mitgcm model. I am trying to figure out
how to output the Richardson Number as a diagnostic. I have the
diagnostic package working and outputting variables of my choice, but
RI is not available to me for some reason. I searched the MITgcm
webpage and came across an email correspondence with your name/email
which showed a printout of your available_diagnostics.log which
included RI (http://mitgcm.org/pipermail/mitgcm-support/2005-April/
002978.html). My available_diagnostics.log does not have RI, and I
am wondering if there is a switch that I need to turn on in order to
make it available? Any assistance you can provide would be much
appreciated.
Thank you,
David Ullman
