one more suggestion (sorry, it's a little bit off thread).

Is it possible to add vertical dimensional variables (say, Z, Zl, Zu) in 
mnc diagnostics output? I know they may be retrieved from grid.*.nc, but 
state.*.nc do have these variables so I guess it's not extremely hard to 
patch... And it will be pretty useful.
