[MITgcm-support] More Leith/Smagorinsky info

I've got a bunch of end-user-level questions about the Leith/
Smagorinsky parameterizations.

0) Is there any complete documentation on them anywhere? I get
"quick-start" hints from this
mailing list, but no general overview.
1) Do I need the very latest source? At the moment I'm using
checkpoint 56 (Nov 2004). My excuse
is that since I use my own CVS repository to track my changes,
tracking constant updates is
   inconvenient.
2) My understanding is that Leith is appropriate for quasi-2d
turbulence, and Smagorinsky for full
    3-d problems, is that right?
3) Do these schemes implement variable tracer diffusivity (diffKhT,
diffKzT, etc), or just viscosity
    (viscAh, viscAz)?
4) Are there any pitfalls I should be aware of, or is it really as
simple as "choose your grid and
timestep to satisfy the CFL criterion, and let Leith/Smagorinsky
handle eddy viscosity for you"?
