Martin, that's correct.  There is no intrinsic problem for pkg/seaice to work 
with Cartesian or other grids.  It's just a matter of defining the correct 
grid info in seaice_init.F  It certainly would be helpful if you or I had 
time and motivation to sort this out.

Jinlun, Patrick, Carl, and I have a proposal pending, which if it were to be 
funded, a first action item would be to port pkg/seaice dynamics to C-grid.  
At that time we would also also take care of cleaning up seaice_init and of 
arbitrary input grids.
