Two things:

1) Look at http://chaucer.lcs.mit.edu/newindex.html
   and say "WOW!"

2) Since we've suddenly started to use the mailing lists and
bug tracker (not clear to me if that was intentional) can
we agree to a policy and to what lists we'll keep:

support at mitgcm.lcs.mit.edu
is currently AJA,CNH,PH,DJ,JMC and is logged to the news-group
*** everything you say here is online and publicly available ***

mitgcm-bugs at mitgcm.lcs.mit.edu
is for bugs reports and tracking. I don't recommend using it
for announcments and general discussion since it will clutter
the site (take a look at the bugs link in above page)
*** I will rename this to be bugs at mitgcm.lcs.mit.edu ***

Currently there are numerous other lists which are out of date
(infact never were up to date since I create some of them on a
lazy day):

  core-devel - exactly as support
  mitgcm - same as gcmmail?
  mitgcm-users - (empty!)
mitgcm-devel - Edward at UConn, Sonya at WHOI, Samar
  ecco-users - Detlef (!), ERemy, John M. (!)
  ecco-devel - Arne, Dimitris, Ralf
  ecco-all - support, ecco-user, ecco-devel
gcmmail - old mail archive (hypermail which we've abandonned)

Currently, to fix and maintain these is a pain; you have to su
on the right machine to edit and run newaliases as root.

If we could agree on a few then I'll set them up as forwarding
accounts that members of the gcmpack group can easily edit.

I suggest we start over with:

  support - Us + cc'd to news-group
ecco - everyone in ecco + support + cc'd to newsgroup
  users - other users + ecco + support + cc'd to newsgroup
thegang - Us *but* private (ie. not on the news-group)
bugs - cc'd to support but only for bug reports

I can point old aliases to these so we don't create panic ("Oh no,
ecco-devel isn't working!").

A.
