Looking further into carbon it runs in pure forward mode after doing

1. adding .genmakerc to input/
2. removing \r from active_file_control.F and active_file_control_slice.F
3. #undef ALLOW_ADJOINT_RUN and #undef ALLOW_GRADIENT_CHECK
   ( although obviously these need to be #define for derivative runs!).
