Hi Bob,

 Everything should work with g77. However, generally people use the
Portland Group compilers available at http://www.pgroup.org or the Intel
IFC compilers for production work. The IFC compiler has a free
non-commercial form for Linux, but otherwise you need to pay fot it. The
Intel and Portland compilers tend to do slightly better optimizations
than the GNU free compilers and have slightly clearer diagnostics.
