Mark,

this sound not very good. I am afraid, that I am not the right person to 
ask. I have never seen this problem. But do post a message to 
support at mitgcm.org, including the compiler version (g77 -v returns the 
version) and the version of the code (latest entry in doc/tag-index). 
Chris (Hill) should know what's going on.

It looks like something on the compiler or operating system level may be 
set in a strange way. XC.001.001.data is a IEEE-binary output file, but 
why should the model try to write formatted (that is ascii) data to it. 
Can you try a different compiler (ifc is free and fast) for diagnostic 
reasons?
