debugLevel makes sense to me - level 1 for cg2d output and level 2 for
the rest of the crap I look at.

Hi Patrick,

 How about controlling the cg2d and mdsio non-error messages to only come
out when debugMode is on?  No need for a new flag then. If anyone complains
we can switch debugMode to debugLevel and have  them appear for
debuglevel=standard (default) but not for debuglevel=silent etc... 

 I think this would be better than a new flag.
