Ed, not suggesting that you should work on this and not sure whether it 
is relevant to the netcdf discussion, just curious why the global 
read/write is such a big issue for netcdf files?  The usesinglecpuio 
capability is an example of gathering I/O to (or scattering I/O from) a 
single process and CPU.  Then all the I/O is done from a master process.
