Hi Helen,

I'll guess that its SSH not forwarding X events somehow.  Please try:

  [helen at home]: ssh -Y adams.csail.mit.edu
  [helen at adams]: matlabonadams -nojvm

and see if that helps.  If not, call me and we can try to figure it out
over the phone.
