Aha!  I found the bug and fixed it!

And it wasn't a problem with the MNC routines per-se.  Rather, it was a
failure to turn off all the MDSIO routines coupled with an uninitialized
'suff' string from the MDSIO bits that were turned off.  Annoying, but
its now fixed and works nicely with g77 and ifort v8.1.

So, on to more interesting things...
