Martin, if you haven't already gone ahead and implemented the masks,
I wonder whether a better place for the masking would be in
external_forcing_surf, instead of pkg/seaice, since the problem you
have detected can also occur when files are read in by
external_fields_load, the standard MIT GCM I/O routine.
