No,
CVS_ROOT is set to /u/u0/gcmpack in .cshrc
and I sourced it again before cvs login.

Also, I saw on lcs.mit.edu that in 
/u/gcmpack/MITgcm/
there is 
ls -al .cvsignore,v
-r--rw-r--    1 jmc      gcmpack      6667 Mar 11 09:58 .cvsignore,v

So, I guess I suspected the wrong culprit ;o)
