Right now, the above will give you an error since the entry 'xC' within
the lookup table is occupied.

There are ways that we could extend the tables to allow for multiple
definitions of variables that will have the same "name" when written to
a NetCDF file.  The easiest way would be to create a "name" entry within
the table separate from the "key" entry (right now, the "name" *is* the
"key").
