Alistair, the poor "iddy biddy gee cee emy" has an 8-GB pickup file,
two dvd's worth of bits.  It's taken me the better part of today to
examine difference between top of one peak to preceding low.

First attachment shows cause for blips in advcfl_w.  It happens near
complex bathymetry, starts going unstable, but miraculously recovers
a number of times.  This is probably the cause for eventual crash on
day 523, but I don't yet know for sure.  A job with hourly dumps is
pending on the altix to confirm that.

Second and third attachments are vertical profiles of wVel near the
six cube corners that are not land.

corner_wvel39528.ps is for viscA4=4e-3, deltaT=1200
corner_wvel37656.ps is for viscA4=5e-3, deltaT=1200

Note that for viscA4=4e-3, deltaT=1200, wVel is quite noisy,
especially near the bottom.  But if I increase viscA4 any further
it starts misbehaving and eventually blows up at the corner.  For
viscA4=5e-3, you can see that one of the corners (left-topmost) is
starting to go real weird.

The impression I get is that the scaling that you use for viscA4 is
not quite right for the corner grid point.  Also biharmonic
diffusivity does not quite work with the hi-res cube so I had to
turn it off, which probably exacerbates the problem.
