Chris, the 50-level 510*510*6 cube-sphere is moving along ... slowly. 
To make it work I had to add a

      CALL EXCH_UV_XYZ_RL(gu,gv,.TRUE.,myThid)

right before the call to SOLVE_FOR_PRESSURE in FORWARD_STEP.  Otherwise
one of the corner gU values is undefined and
CALC_DIV_GHAT blows up.  Could you have a look see why that is.

I am attaching a first picture, Eta at time step 20, with 1-s time steps
(while waiting for Alistair's springy grid that will allow us to
increase the time step size ;o).
