[MITgcm-support] Tidal forcing in regional simulations

Dear MITgcm-ers,

I have another question regarding the setup of high-resolution regional simulations in marginal seas of the Mediterranean.
We would like to impose tidal forcing at the boundary: our domains are about 4° × 4° wide, so I don't think we need also tidal potential (but, of course, I would be happy to know your opinion about this!).

We noticed that some updates have been made recently to the code (https://github.com/MITgcm/MITgcm/tree/master/pkg/obcs <https://github.com/MITgcm/MITgcm/tree/master/pkg/obcs>, issue #617 <https://github.com/MITgcm/MITgcm/issues/617> and PR #752 <https://github.com/MITgcm/MITgcm/pull/752>).
We used to create the "old version" files (OBSamFile, OBSphFile, etc...) customizing the Matlab tides <http://wwwcvs.mitgcm.org/viewvc/MITgcm/MITgcm_contrib/tides/> tool created by Xiaochun Wang and found in MITgcm_contrib <http://wwwcvs.mitgcm.org/viewvc/MITgcm/MITgcm_contrib/>, which uses the Tidal Model Driver (TMD) toolbox.
Now we would like to switch to Python (and, indeed, pyTMD <https://github.com/pyTMD/pyTMD> is available), but there are no "interface" scripts with MITgcm. Compared to the Matlab version of TMD, pyTMD has some differences and we were wondering if there were tools to produce the "new version" OB files for MITgcm (OBS_vTidamFile, OBS_vTidphFile, etc...). Otherwise, we will translate the Matlab tools in Python, as originally planned...
I also have not found much more info about these topics in the documentation.

Another question... is someone aware of high resolution tidal datasets (atlas) that include the Mediterranean area? I found mostly global or polar models (e.g., https://g.hyyb.org/archive/Tide/TPXO/TPXO_WEB/ptm_index_files/polar_tide_models.html <https://g.hyyb.org/archive/Tide/TPXO/TPXO_WEB/ptm_index_files/polar_tide_models.html>). Several years ago, I found an interesting dataset at this link (http://volkov.oce.orst.edu/tides/med.html <http://volkov.oce.orst.edu/tides/med.html>), but it does not seem available any more...

Thank you!

Cheers,

Stefano and Andrea
