[MITgcm-support] Asymmetric temperature and velocities under zonally symmetric wind forcing

Hello everyone,

I'm trying to simulate the ocean circulation in a 2D domain (x-z), and there is no topography everywhere.

Under the SST forcing only, the results are zonally symmetric.

However, when the wind forcing (symmetry is guaranteed) is included, both the temperature (including the surface temperature) and velocities show zonally asymmetry, as shown in Figure 3 attached (rbcs package is not used). And the zonal momentum budget (Figure 4 attached) also demonstrates the symmetry of wind forcing and the asymmetry of dissipation and advection terms.

Do you know what causes this zonal asymmetry? If you have any suggestions, please tell me.

Thanks in advance!

Best,

Yanhong
