[MITgcm-support] viscosity

Hi there,

I am forcing barotropic tide over a continental shelf with critical slope to get baroclinic response. My water depth varies from 2km to 500m and the horizontal resolution varies from 500m (outside the topography) to around 100m (near and on the shelf). 200 points vertically. I am using scheme 33.

I keep getting noise even starting from the first 10 tidal periods. Varying resolution or time steps does not seem to help the noise. So I tried the KL10 viscosity package, which made the noise better but its still there. I am not sure if this is a coding question, do you think I should switch to use nonlinear viscosity such as smag viscosity? Or I should try increasing my horizontal viscosity instead.

Thanks

Yangxin
