[MITgcm-support] FW: Variable Kh in MITgcm

Hi all,

Can anyone confirm if it is still the case that Kh must be uniform in offline MITgcm? A reviewer has suggested that it can be variable.

Thanks,

Neill.

Hi Neill,

Unfortunately I believe nothing has changed since the response by Martin 2 years ago: variable horizontal viscosity and variable vertical diffusivity are implemented -- but I don't think variable horizontal diffusivity is implemented

Hi guys,

See below - I thought I should send this to the support as well.

Thanks,

Hi Matt,

How are things?

It’s been suggested to me that it might be possible to input a spatially variable horizontal diffusivity into the offline MITgcm in a similar way as I have been doing for the vertical diffusivity. This would be really useful as it seems that the horizontal diffusion ought perhaps to be higher in Drake Passage than in the Pacific. However, a quick search of the e-mail archives suggests that this was not possible in 2010:

Do you know if this is still the case, or by any chance has a means of specifying variable Kh been implemented?

Cheers,

Neill.
