That doesn’t sound right.   If you want to prescribe a bc every hour (say), then set externalForcingPeriod to 3600.  If you want that to repeat every 12 hours set externalForcingPeriod to 43200 (of course you may want to set those to 3720 and 44640 if you want 12.4 h diurnal tides.).
