Dear Ryan,

we were working on the same issue and developed a Discrete Variance
Decay (DVD) analysis.
With this we can quantify spurious mixing of tracers and spurious
dissipation of kinetic energy.

The original method can be found in Burchard and Rennau (2008):
http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.ocemod.2007.10.003

Recently we submitted a manuscript to Ocean Modelling (Klingbeil et al.,
2013) in which we develop a more general DVD analysis. Please do not
hesitate to contact me.

Best regards,

Knut
