do you use matlab?
if yes, I suggest you take a look at a wonderful toolbox written by  
Rich Pawlowicz and called m_map
http://www.eos.ubc.ca/~rich/map.html
it's free, it's brilliant, and it's way, way better than matlab's  
clunky and expensive mapping toolbox.
