Quite some time ago, I found documentation by Adcroft et al. regarding 
this issue (and more) that I find more summed up than the users manual. 
You can see what I mean e.g. by following those links :

These are the presentation version and the article version of the same 
document. I find those quite nice as they are a bit more explicit 
(although maybe less accurate), but as they are 4 years old, I wonder if 
they are still up to date. Are they ?
