Hi Nico,
VTK and the many other KitWare-provided and 3rd-party VTK-based
products are pretty cool visualization tools. I've been using VTK
through both the C++ API and the python interface. I've also been
using the octave--VTK interface ("octaviz") which is incidentally under
submission as a Fedora package:

I've not tried Vis5D, VISIT, or zeGraph but thanks for pointing them
out.
