Yes, that's good advice!  :-)

Back during GCC v4.0.x the gfortran compiler was decidedly flakier than
g77.  By all reports, the situation has changed with recent GCC
releases.

And, on a related note, the Fedora 7 netcdf packages will drop support
for g77.
