i updated first thing.
things looked real good...

  Do we have the etime() command using pgf77...  yes
  Can we call simple C routines (here, "cloc()") using pgf77...  yes
  Can we unlimit the stack size using pgf77...  yes
  Can we register a signal handler using pgf77...  yes
  Can we use stat() through C calls...  yes
  Can we create NetCDF-enabled binaries...  yes

and everything seems to be working as discussed in recent posts.
i was able to create *.nc files for each timestep.
a simple ncks command then stripped out the temperature.
so a shell script will work for all.
