Cool!  Thank you for sending an example!

I checked both your script and a very brief README file into the user
contributed area ("MITgcm_contrib") of our CVS repository so that it
will be available as a reference for others:

  http://mitgcm.org/cgi-bin/viewcvs.cgi/MITgcm_contrib/Friis_ODV/

It can be retrieved from CVS using:

  $ export CVSROOT=':pserver:cvsanon at mitgcm.org:/u/gcmpack'
  $ cvs login 
    ( enter the CVS password: "cvsanon" )
  $ cvs co MITgcm_contrib/Friis_ODV
