Patrick,
The JPL 1 degree ECCO setup has a stretched grid in Y. Dimitris can point
you at a tag and branch for that.
There is also a setup in
http://dev.mitgcm.org/cgi-bin/viewcvs.cgi/MITgcm_contrib/natl_12/
that has grid varying in both X and Y.
The two above had custom code for spatially varying viscosity and
diffusion. The latest checkpoints have that code embedded. In the
checkpoints with the code embedded the magic parmeters have the string
"Grid" appended e.g. viscA4Grid and have units of an inverse time-scale.
