Hi Jinlun,
the reason is that the sponge layer code using
'real time' obcs values (and thus being controlled
by the calendar package) was part of the ECCO
distribution. This code hasn't made it into the
main branch yet, but I think it will soon.
In the mean time we could provide you that code
separately from the MITgcm distribution.
