Hi Chris,
If you google for: 
  CVS "unknown error 523"
then theres two things that emerge:
  1) the "unknown error 523" string is some sort of catch-all error 
     message for CVS, and
  2) it seems to be a sporadic thing thats somehow associated with
     people using CVS against NFS-mounted repositories
So I don't have a good fix for this one.  Perhaps we should point people
at:
  [t]csh:
    setenv CVSROOT :pserver:cvsanon at auden.lcs.mit.edu:/u/u0/gcmpack
  bash:
    export CVSROOT=":pserver:cvsanon at auden.lcs.mit.edu:/u/u0/gcmpack"
so that folks aren't using an NFS-mounted volume?  Does that help for
you?
