I really do like our automatic(?) bug reply cf. below.
Should also have it for the adjoint:

Thank you for your interest in automatically differentiating the code.
If gradient checks fail please do the following:
    1. Check that the machine is turned on/off (forward/adjoint).
    2. Check that the power cable is (dis-/)connected (adjoint-/forward).
    3. Check that there is power (no power) supplied to the wall socket.
