Alistair, would you be able to recall the conversation you had with Jinlun
Zhang about sea-ice dynamic solver, and to summarize your recommendations in a
brief e-mail? This would help get the ball rolling in the right direction.
The relevant references that describe Jinlun's sea-ice code, as included in
the MITgcm, are in release1_p9:verification/lab_sea/seaice.ps
In the coming weeks, I am planning to combine the seaice and exf packages
together. Before this morning's phone call, I would have left the sea-ice
bulk formulae of pkg/seaice intact. But it may make sense to replace/combine
them with those of pkg/exf and to move all the open-water bulk formulae code
to pkg/exf. Is this what MIT folks would like to have?
The bulk formulae for open-water momentum default to equation 2 of Hibler 79,
with a quadratic drag coefficient (search for windx and windy in
pkg/seaice/dynsolver). These could easily be replaced with pkg/exf bulk
formulae to provide wind stress at top of sea-ice/open water (albeit with a
modified formulation of drag coefficient over cells that are partially or
completely covered with sea-ice).
The bulk formulae for sensible and latent heat fluxes are based on Hibler 80,
equation B1 (search for qneto in budget.F). These could also be combined with
package exf, but the separation is not as clean as for momentum because cells
that are partially or completely covered with sea-ice still require knowledge
of atmospheric conditions, not of fluxes.
