Alistair, I feel honored to have been given access to your cvs tree.
What are your policies?

I am not sure what the root path you sent me is supposed to do.
I am able to checkout the kpp package using:

cvs -d /u/gcmpack checkout models/MITgcmUV/pkg/kpp

but if I try your command I get following error message:

bronte{~}% cvs -d :exe:@bronte.lcs.mit.edu:/u/gcmpack checkout models/MITgcmUV/pkg/kpp
cvs checkout: unknown method in CVSroot: :exe:@bronte.lcs.mit.edu:/u/gcmpack
cvs [checkout aborted]: Bad CVSROOT.
