Using three phases for patterned exchanges means 2 out of 6 procs are idle
during each phase.

Here's an alternative:

Orient cube so North pole is at corner of tiles 1, 2 and 3.

  exch cyclonically across edges that touch N and S poles.
  exch anti-cyclonically across edges that touch N and S poles.
  exch cyclonically across edges that touch neither pole.
  exch anti-cyclonically across edges that touch neither pole.

All procs are doing send/recv pairs at all times.
