Latest news - still puzzled! Reverted ini_depths.F and
then tried either the later form of 
ini_mask ( UV_CUBE_EXCH(hFacW,HfacS,...) ) or the
earlier form ( _R4_EXCH(hFacw); _EXCH_R4(hFacS) ).
Neither gives numbers in results/ouput.txt.
Note - with earlier form ( with _R4_EXCH() ) of
ini_masks code gives NaN with 720s timestep.
This is true of ini_depths.F hacked by cnh or 
ini_depths.F prior to cnh mischief.
